AWHS freshman Elena Webb, sees photography as more than just a hobby—it’s a passion that is paving the way for her future in film. Recently, her talent was recognized at the 37th Annual Photography Contest held by the Photo Arts Club of Toledo, where she won both first place and third place in the Youth Division.

Elena’s interest in photography and videography began after watching the Scream movies in seventh grade. Since then, she has devoted hours to learning the craft, following photographers and filmmakers online, experimenting with different styles, and capturing many, many images through her lens.

Currently enrolled in Art Foundations with Miss Hailey Kirchner, Elena is recognized as a thoughtful and dedicated artist. “She consistently pushes herself, not just technically but conceptually,” says Ms. Kirchner. “She creates artwork that first place photo of football player Friday Night Lights

reflects her ideas, values, and unique perspective, making her work both compelling and meaningful. Her passion for her craft and commitment to growth shine through in everything she does.”

Next year, Elena plans to take Yearbook to expand her photography experience, as well as Drama to connect with other students who may be interested in being actors for future film projects.

Her first-place photograph, Friday Night Lights, captures AWHS student-athlete Dayvion Parker during one of the last football games of the season. Armed with her Lumix G7 camera, Elena’s usually takes over 1,000 shots per game, then pours through them, looking for the best 40 to share. While she favors sports and action photography are her primary focus, Elena also enjoys exploring urban landscapes. Her 3rd place-winning entry Stairs in Downtown Toledo, was captured on a recent visit.

Beyond competitions, Elena is actively involved with the school’s athletic department, taking photos for the football and lacrosse teams. She is also broadening her skills by creating promotional content, such as editing a commercial for Waterville Primary’s Snack Cart and collaborating with the local fire department on a social media video project. Looking ahead, she plans to participate in the 48-hour film challenge in Toledo.
