April Board Meeting Follow-Up
April 8, 2025

Dear Anthony Wayne Local Schools Stakeholders,

The Board of Education held its regular April meeting last night, and I would like to share a few highlights with you. If you would like to view a recording of the meeting, you may watch the recording online

2025-2026 District Calendar
I’m happy to share that the proposed changes to the 2025-2026 District Calendar were approved. These changes allow for the end of the first semester to occur before winter break, and to avoid having the end of the school year extend into June. View and download next year’s calendar at www.AnthonyWayneSchools.org/Schedule

military student recognitionMilitary-Connected Student Recognition & Purple Star Renewals
April is the Month of the Military Child and the Board recognized students who participate in the District’s Purple Star programs. Christine Young, AW Junior High Military Family Liaison provided an overview of the ways our schools support our military-connected students. Special guest, Marty Rothey, Northwest Regional Manager for the Ohio School Boards Association presented Purple Star School renewal designation certificates to Anthony Wayne High School, Fallen Timbers Middle School and Waterville Primary School for their programs benefiting students with family members who serve in the military.

District Finances
Kerri Johnson, District Treasurer, discussed the potential impact of the state’s pending budget plan, proposed by the Ohio House, on the District’s finances. While she does not expect a significant benefit or drawback to the District’s state funding at this time, the House proposal provides uncertainty of school funding moving forward. The 'removal' of the Fair School Funding Plan, implemented in the last Biennium, is a detriment to school funding. There is a lot of work to be done and discussions that need to happen before the state budget is signed by the Governor on June 30. She will hold a work session with the Board at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 17 to discuss the annual 5-year forecast update.

UPDATED April 15: The Board Work Session scheduled for April 17 will now start at 7:00 a.m.

Other Business
The Board also:
  • approved a Resolution for Execution of Real Estate Purchase Contract for a property located at 6446 N Texas Street, Whitehouse, OH 43571 to be purchased with Permanent Improvement funds. The house will be removed and the property will be annexed with the Whitehouse Primary School campus.
  • permitted the Treasurer to seek bids for the projects listed below. More information about these Permanent Improvement projects is available on the Facilities Planning page:
    • Monclova Primary School Roof Replacement
    • AWJH / FTMS Cooler and Freezer Projects
    • AWHS Auditorium Lighting and Sound Project
  • accepted a $2,500 grant from the Ohio Space Grant Consortium for Waterville Primary School.
  • approved several overnight trips for student teams and organizations
