The Anthony Wayne Girls Junior High Cross Country Team achieved a major victory at the OHSAA Invitational on Sunday, October 20, at Fortress Obetz and Memorial Park in Obetz, Ohio. Competing against tough teams, the girls secured 1st place and claimed the OHSAA Invitational State Championship.
Earlier in the season, the team finished as NLL runners up. In the 20 days between the league and state meets, they sharpened both their physical skills and mental focus, with all five of the top runners achieving personal records (PR) at the state race.
Top performances came from Avelyn Lengel, who placed 4th, Mikaya Peabody (6th), Simone Strickland (14th), Hannah Howard (16th), Annalyce Kimerer (30th), Piper Harless (38th), and Braylen Wissolik (40th).
Captains Avee Lengel and Mikaya Peabody led the team throughout the season, while Simone Strickland and Hannah Howard significantly improved their times, achieving PRs by 1:11 and 47 seconds, respectively. Despite the absence of top runner Koralyn (Kora) Lengel due to injury, Annalyce Kimerer stepped up and delivered a strong performance.
Coach Risner praised the team, saying, "They were a great group of girls who knew how to motivate and push each other. They came to practice ready and willing to work hard. They took things seriously, especially the mental preparation that took place before each race."
Coach Zemanski added, "The girls picked the biggest day to have their best day! It was a pleasure to coach such a great group of hardworking, determined athletes. Their future is bright in our program!"
Congratulations to these hardworking and determined athletes!
