May Board of Education Meeting Highlights

May 13, 2025


Dear AWLS Stakeholders,

The Anthony Wayne Local Schools Board of Education held its regular May meeting last night. This letter will provide an overview of the actions taken, along with links where you can find more information. 

The meeting opened with local Girl Scout troop1362 leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Special guest, Rep. Josh Williams spoke to the Board and those in attendance about the school funding formula and its potential effects on AWLS. 

Financial Updates

  • The Board approved the annual May Five-Year Forecast update

  • Bids were awarded for the purchase of three new school buses, and for the Monclova Primary School roof and the AWHS track replacement projects. These projects are part of the Facilities Master Plan and will be paid for through Permanent Improvement funds.

  • The Board approved a Resolution of Urgent Necessity and contract with Trane for the Waterville Primary HVAC Renovation and Energy Savings Project.

  • The Board also approved other contracts and accepted several donations in support of scholarships, athletics teams, student activities and other programs. 


Superintendent’s Update

  • The Board heard from school representatives about the District’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS Framework).

  • Mr. Herman acknowledged the efforts of all District staff in honor of Staff Appreciation Week.

  • The Board approved and entered into 3-year agreements with AWEA and OAPSE for certified and classified staff contracts.

  • Dr. Kevin Pfefferle was approved to serve as the District’s next assistant superintendent.

  • The members of the Class of 2025 were approved for graduation, contingent on completion of all requirements.

  • In preparation for the 2025-26 school year, the Board approved student handbooks and school / athletics fees.

  • The District adopted the Ohio Model Policies for Special Education, with a brief update provided by the Special Education Directors.

  • The Board approved renewal contracts for certified, classified and administrative staff, along with several other personnel changes including resignations, recommendations for hire and contract modifications.

  • Following the regular business, the Board entered into Executive Session.

The next regular Board meeting will be at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June. 25. A special meeting may be called prior to this meeting, if it is needed for activities related to closing out the fiscal year.
